Lapierre, Morgon

What more can we say about the lovely, impossibly drinkable bottles that have been coming out of the Lapierre cellars for several decades? Marcel Lapierre is by far the best-known name in Beaujolais, which simply means the estate has been committed to quality for some time now. We've happily consumed more bottles from Lapierre over the years than just about any other producer in the region, and it would be nearly impossible to think of a setting in which we wouldn't want to drink these wines. Mathieu and his sister, Camille, have furthered the great work of their immensely influential father and have continued to elevate the status of the domaine worldwide. As always, the Lapierre Morgon is fermented whole cluster with native yeasts and aged on the lees for around 9 months in used Burgundy barrels. We’re certain that strong-willed and patient collectors will be very well rewarded a few years down the road, though we're uncertain if we will be able to fall into that group as we can't seem to hold off ourselves! The wines are lithe and finesse driven and, for many, the reference point of Beaujolais, as a whole. On top of that, they tend to age very well, so there is lot of versatility in terms of intending to drink now or saving for later. Behind it all, though, is meticulous farming and winemaking which form the true foundation of this great estate. Their 'Morgon' bottling comes from 70-year-old vines grown on sandy, decomposed granite.

As of the 2021 vintage, you’ll note a new Lapierre bottling: ‘Le Beaujolais’, a mid-tier offering between the ‘Raisins Gaulois’ and the Morgon. Le Beaujolais macerates twice as long as the Raisins Gaulois, but just as long as the Morgon. The 70-year-old vines lie just outside the Morgon boundary—and are the exact same age as those in the Morgon cuvée, making this a steal. This drinks like a fine red Burgundy and a wine worth far more than the modest price tag. Silky tannins and spicy red fruits and nice minerality.

We love Morgon as they tend to be the most balanced of the Crus in Beaujolais. Thevenet is counted as of the Kermit Lynch Gang of Four (also includes Foillard, Lapierre, Guy Breton) that make wine naturally and farm organically. Jean-Paul Thevenet is the third generation to work his family’s farm in Morgon. He has spent the last 40 years tailoring his work in the vineyard and the winery to accomplish the task of making the very best Morgon he can. He makes only one wine, in an average year producing 2000 cases from 5 hectares of vines that are 45 to 110 years old. Like the other members of the gang, he works naturally in the vineyard employing biodynamic methods and utilizes only native yeast in the winery. The palate is lifted and driven more by acidity and minerality than tannin with a long finish.

Jean-Claude Lapalu is based in the southern Cru of Brouilly, where his family has farmed for generations. Jean-Claude has been farming his land organically for decades, certified in 2010, and is currently in biodynamic conversion. He approaches his work in the cellar with a light touch, preferring native yeasts and sparse additions of sulfur. Setting aside his rare Cuvee des Fous, the Croix des Rameaux is his finest wine, and is one of our very favorite Beaujolais cru wines year after year. Only 200 cases are made. Lapalu is laser-focused on energy, brightness, and lift, and his wines always deliver in this regard. The signature fruit profile is that of a suave black cherry, marked by lift and energy, and driven by earthier elements to render a more complete wine. Jean-Claude has some interesting theories about wine--notably his notion that wines are divisible into two categories: there are those which 'one drinks while standing up', which seems to imply that they're simpler and more linear, and then there are those which 'one drinks while sitting down', and these are the single vineyard/parcel wines (of which the Croix des Rameaux is an example). Jean-Claude remarks that Brouilly terroir demands a more attentive vinification--the wine refuses to 'simply make itself', as many in the 'natural wine' world would love to pretend. The Croix des Rameaux is made from a handful of special Brouilly parcels, with vines aged between 60 and 90 years. The wine undergoes semi-carbonic maceration for three weeks, before aging in neutral barrel 6-8 months. It is then finished with the tiniest bit of sulfur--10mg at bottling, in order to yield the liveliest, freshest wine possible.

Jean Foillard's 2023 Morgon, Cuvée Corcelette, is a profound expression of Gamay from this esteemed Beaujolais Cru.
