As a defining figure of the Beaujolais natural wine movement, Breton utilizes organic viticulture and whole-cluster carbonic maceration followed by aging in neutral Burgundy barrels to emphasize transparency and structural definition.

The 2018 vintage, characterized by a warm and solar growing season, provided significant physiological ripeness and concentration, which Breton managed through precise harvest timing to maintain essential acidity and tension. The vinification involves a deliberate technical avoidance of chaptalization and minimal sulfur use, ensuring the wine's structural integrity and mineral profile remain unmasked.

This Gamay exhibits the fine-grained tannins typical of Morgon, offering a dense mid-palate and a persistent finish that is further stabilized by the slow maturation afforded by the double magnum format.
Jules Métras approaches his Chiroubles holdings with a commitment to biodynamic farming and rigorous soil stewardship, eschewing synthetic inputs to ensure a direct reflection of the site. Marcel Lapierre is by far the best-known name in Beaujolais, which simply means the estate has been committed to quality for some time now. We've happily consumed more bottles from Lapierre over the years than just about any other producer in the region, and it would be nearly impossible to think of a setting in which we wouldn't want to drink these wines. Mathieu and his sister, Camille, have furthered the great work of their immensely influential father and have continued to elevate the status of the domaine worldwide. As always, the Lapierre Morgon is fermented whole cluster with native yeasts and aged on the lees for around 9 months in used Burgundy barrels. We’re certain that strong-willed and patient collectors will be very well rewarded a few years down the road, though we're uncertain if we will be able to fall into that group as we can't seem to hold off ourselves! The wines are lithe and finesse driven and, for many, the reference point of Beaujolais, as a whole. On top of that, they tend to age very well, so there is lot of versatility in terms of intending to drink now or saving for later. Setting aside his rare Cuvee des Fous, the Croix des Rameaux is his finest wine, and is one of our very favorite Beaujolais cru wines year after year. Only 200 cases are made. Lapalu is laser-focused on energy, brightness, and lift, and his wines always deliver in this regard. The signature fruit profile is that of a suave black cherry, marked by lift and energy, and driven by earthier elements to render a more complete wine. Jean-Claude has some interesting theories about wine--notably his notion that wines are divisible into two categories: there are those which 'one drinks while standing up', which seems to imply that they're simpler and more linear, and then there are those which 'one drinks while sitting down', and these are the single vineyard/parcel wines (of which the Croix des Rameaux is an example). Jean-Claude remarks that Brouilly terroir demands a more attentive vinification--the wine refuses to 'simply make itself', as many in the 'natural wine' world would love to pretend. The Croix des Rameaux is made from a handful of special Brouilly parcels, with vines aged between 60 and 90 years. The wine undergoes semi-carbonic maceration for three weeks, before aging in neutral barrel 6-8 months. It is then finished with the tiniest bit of sulfur--10mg at bottling, in order to yield the liveliest, freshest wine possible.

Jean Foillard’s approach to his Fleurie, sourced from old vines rooted in pink sandstone and granitic soils, prioritizes the preservation of site specificity through rigorous organic farming and absolute minimal intervention in the cellar. Unlike the estate’s standard bottlings, the Griffe du Marquis is drawn from a selection of the domain’s oldest vines—some dating back to the 1930s—planted in heavy clay soils uniquely rich in manganese.

Following a traditional whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts, this cuvée is distinguished by an aging regimen in French oak barriques, a departure from the larger foudres used elsewhere in the cellar. The 2021 vintage, characterized by a cool, challenging growing season, resulted in lower potential alcohol and preserved a focused, high-tension acidity that underpins the wine’s fine-grained, structured palate.

This interplay between the site’s inherent mineral-rich density and the vintage’s structural nerve yields a wine of precise, deliberate architecture.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0709/8001/0232/files/IMG_3472_704a60e9-9a17-4d26-bf16-1a99161e929c.jpg?v=1775590114
2024-domaine-de-la-grand-cour-dutraive-fleurie-tous-ensemble
2024 Domaine de la Grand Cour (Dutraive), Fleurie, Tous Ensemble
The Domaine de la Grand’Cour "Tous Ensemble" Fleurie is a direct expression of the Dutraive family’s long-standing organic viticulture and low-intervention approach in Beaujolais. Sourced from estate holdings within the Fleurie cru, the Gamay grapes are handled with minimal interference, utilizing native yeast, whole-cluster fermentation, and aging in neutral vessels to prioritize textural purity over extraction. The 2024 growing season—characterized by a cool, wet spring and a late-summer harvest—has resulted in a structural profile defined by high-toned tension and bright, nervous acidity. This vintage effectively highlights the granite-derived minerality inherent to the site, offering a fine-grained, weightless palate that privileges structural clarity and precise, linear persistence.

Yohan Lardy is based in Fleurie, but this wine comes from a small old-vine parcel in Moulin-à-Vent planted in 1903. A combination of pink granite, quartz and manganese-rich soils gives this bottle darker fruit and more structure than its Fleurie counterparts. Lardy uses whole-cluster, semi-carbonic maceration for about 20 days followed by 12 months aging in a very old 3,000L foudre to allow the structure of the vines to shine. A cool, wet 2024 vintage produced lower yields and more concentrated grapes; Black cherry, violet and earth coalesce into a powerful, complex Gamay worth grabbing.This magnum is a great bottle for a table and serious enough to lay down in the cellar for years to come. The wine is made from Gamay vines averaging 30 to 45 years old, which are rooted in heavy clay soils rich in manganese rather than the typical granite found elsewhere in the village. In the glass, this red wine offers bright aromas of cherry and raspberry alongside firm acidity and distinct earthy, mineral tones that provide a balanced, structured mouthfeel. The 2024 vintage, defined by a cool and rainy growing season, resulted in a fresh, fruit-forward profile with fine, delicate tannins. This bottle is ready to enjoy tonight but maintains the balance to develop further if left in the cellar.
