This bottling represents the estate's historic assembly of Brunate and Le Coste, a blend that utilizes the high clay content of the former to provide structural mass and the limestone-rich soils of the latter to introduce mineral tension.

In the 2005 vintage, a temperate late summer allowed for slow physiological ripening, resulting in a Barolo with significant acid retention and a fine-grained but assertive tannic backbone. The wine’s architectural density is underscored by a cool-vintage nerve that dictates the mid-palate, while the Double Magnum format has further moderated its oxidative development to preserve its savory, earth-bound core.

This large-format bottling offers a transparent look at Nebbiolo’s capacity for longevity when handled with a commitment to long-term wood aging and minimal cellar interference.
2016 Comm. D. Vajra makes pure, precise, elegant wines. At the heart of the G.D. Vajra winery lies the thoughtful and deliberate approach of Giuseppe Vajra and his family, who are among this historic region’s greatest and most thoughtful ambassadors. Rather than adhering strictly to "modern" or "traditional" labels, their philosophy is best described as pragmatic and extremely detailed, allowing their special terroirs to shape and define their wines more than anything they do in the cellar. They are pioneers in organic farming, having embraced these practices since the early 1970s. In the cellar, there is an emphasis on gentle extraction and less invasive fermentation and ageing. They carefully ferment in stainless steel, allowing the pure fruit expression to shine through. Long maceration times are common, but these are carefully managed to avoid over-extraction, and the use of large Slavonian oak casks (botti) for aging ensure that the wines develop complexity without being dominated by wood. Coste di Rose is a small Cru located on a steep, south-facing slope that the Vajra’s say “arises from Bosco della Fava and descends swiftly towards the border with Monforte d’Alba. The greatest emotion is the one you feel when reaching the top of the vineyard: a five-meter-tall dune of pure Arenarie di Diano stands out there, as the witness of the unique soil composition of Coste di Rose. These sands provide Barolo DOCG Coste di Rose with its distinctive character: tones of cherry and rose petals, mint and sweet spices, a silky tannin and a juicy sip.” This is by far the most approachable of Vajra’s Cru bottlings and the one I like to drink young with reckless abandon. The ’21 is very aromatic, giving and distinctly delicate as compared to the Ravera and Bricco del Viole bottlings.

2021 G.D. Vajra's parcels are in the southern amphitheater of Ravera, specifically within the Comune di Novello, at elevations between 300 and 380 meters above sea level. The soil here is very complex, “where marls of Tortonian origin mix with sandstones and clays of the Serravallian period.” This intricate geological makeup contributes to a wine that is both structured and aromatically rich. This wine has sneaky power with a reserved, taught, complex vibe. Tannins are ripe, fine, and present here with a stony, mineral character which leads me to believe this will be an extremely long-lived wine. There is great energy, life and vitality in this and clearly it will reward a bit of patience in the cellar, but I would still categorize this as a generous, extremely well-balanced wine.

It’s hard to talk about Piedmont without spending significant time on Cappellano. He was a firm believer that reducing a living, breathing work of art to a single number stripped the wine of its identity. That level of integrity is rare, and it defines everything they do.

Teobaldo was also a fierce defender of site integrity. When the DOCG expanded the boundaries of the historic Gabutti vineyard to include what he considered inferior soil, he was so disgusted that he removed the vineyard name from his label entirely. He chose to label the wines simply as 'Piè Rupestris' (grafted) and 'Piè Franco' (ungrafted), preferring to lose the prestige of a 'Cru' name rather than participate in the dilution of his vineyard’s history.
