This vintage is in an optimal drinking window and can be enjoyed now or laid down to age gracefully over the coming years. The fruit for this wine comes from a 3-hectare vineyard in the Jurançon appellation in Southwest France. This vineyard is planted entirely with the native Petit Manseng variety. The site is quite special, forming a natural amphitheater at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains. This unique topography, along with the clay and rounded limestone soils, contributes to the distinct character and minerality of the wine. There is an incredible play between rich fruit and vibrant acidity that reminds me texturally of white Burgundy. Didier Dagueneau himself was drawn to this site, finding its panoramic views reminiscent of the mythical Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which inspired the wine's name. This dry bottling is made from 100% Petit Manseng. When you craft dry wines from varieties that were in regions historically devoted to dessert wines, you quite often end up with the same magical outcome: a dry wine that has an almost creamy and honeyed entry and a repressed fruitiness to it, which does a brilliant somersault as it moves from the attack to the dry, mineral finish. Farming is conducted under strict biodynamic principles on slopes composed of clay and silica, where the vines are managed to ensure physiological ripeness while maintaining the variety’s inherent, razor-sharp structural profile. The 2021 vintage, characterized by a cooler and more temperate growing season, favored the retention of intense acidity and firm mineral tension, providing a precise architectural counterpoint to the demi-sec dosage.
