As a defining figure of the Beaujolais natural wine movement, Breton utilizes organic viticulture and whole-cluster carbonic maceration followed by aging in neutral Burgundy barrels to emphasize transparency and structural definition.

The 2018 vintage, characterized by a warm and solar growing season, provided significant physiological ripeness and concentration, which Breton managed through precise harvest timing to maintain essential acidity and tension. The vinification involves a deliberate technical avoidance of chaptalization and minimal sulfur use, ensuring the wine's structural integrity and mineral profile remain unmasked.

This Gamay exhibits the fine-grained tannins typical of Morgon, offering a dense mid-palate and a persistent finish that is further stabilized by the slow maturation afforded by the double magnum format.

The Foillard name carries as much weight as any producer in Beaujolais, and for good reason. When the wines are on form, as they most often are, they represent some of the most complete bottles of the category. These exemplify exactly why we adore top Beaujolais so much in the first place. They are a joy to drink in their youth in all their energy and freshness and are endlessly versatile at the table at all stages of their life. We wouldn’t trade in Gamay’s innate youthful exuberance for anything, though in the case of serious producers like Foillard, it almost does a disservice as to how well the wines can develop with age. Foillard’s longtime importer, Kermit Lynch, captures the spirit of these wines with his usual simple eloquence: “deliciousness with class.” Foillard's vines in Corcelette are around 80 years old, planted on sandstone. This wine always shows impeccable elegance and purity. Foillard’s wines are always an unyieldingly pure expression of the vintage and his special terroirs, reaching towards the pinnacle of Gamay’s potential, year after year.

Jean Foillard’s ‘Eponym’ is sourced exclusively from Les Charmes, the highest-altitude lieu-dit in Morgon, where 50-year-old Gamay vines are anchored in a complex substrate of schist, granite, and manganese. Following the rigorous standards of the estate, the fruit is harvested late and subjected to a traditional three-to-four-week whole-cluster fermentation without added sulfur or filtration.

The cool 2021 growing season imparted a distinct structural profile to this cuvée, emphasizing bright, persistent acidity and fine-grained tannins that contrast with the more dense, opulent expressions of the region. Elevage in neutral Burgundy barrels refines this architectural tension, resulting in a wine that balances internal energy and palpable mineral drive.

What more can we say about the lovely, impossibly drinkable bottles that have been coming out of the Lapierre cellars for several decades? Marcel Lapierre is by far the best-known name in Beaujolais, which simply means the estate has been committed to quality for some time now. We've happily consumed more bottles from Lapierre over the years than just about any other producer in the region, and it would be nearly impossible to think of a setting in which we wouldn't want to drink these wines. Mathieu and his sister, Camille, have furthered the great work of their immensely influential father and have continued to elevate the status of the domaine worldwide. As always, the Lapierre Morgon is fermented whole cluster with native yeasts and aged on the lees for around 9 months in used Burgundy barrels. We’re certain that strong-willed and patient collectors will be very well rewarded a few years down the road, though we're uncertain if we will be able to fall into that group as we can't seem to hold off ourselves! The wines are lithe and finesse driven and, for many, the reference point of Beaujolais, as a whole. On top of that, they tend to age very well, so there is lot of versatility in terms of intending to drink now or saving for later. Behind it all, though, is meticulous farming and winemaking which form the true foundation of this great estate. Their 'Morgon' bottling comes from 70-year-old vines grown on sandy, decomposed granite.

We love Morgon as they tend to be the most balanced of the Crus in Beaujolais.
