After Giovanna’s training in enology, she worked during the 1980’s for Chianti powerhouse San Felice, where she helped plant and monitor an experimental plot of over 300 native Tuscan cultivars. Just as she was in the middle of this massive undertaking, her father (a legendary enologist in his own right) offered her one of the noblest gifts on Earth: a 3-hectare plot in Castelnuovo Berardegna - a hallowed address for fine Sangiovese. Given her formative experience with rare varietals, when it came time to plant her own vineyard, she included lesser-known grapes like Foglia Tonda and Mammolo alongside Sangiovese, and planted them at a staggeringly high-density 7000 vines per hectare. She also made the painstaking choice to work en gobelet, an arduous, labor-intensive way of farming for perfectionists obsessed with quality. Giovanna believes these vines yield higher quality, more terroir-transparent fruit - and in making this choice, she sacrifices half of her yields in the name of quality! All harvests are by hand, and farming follows biodynamic practices. The Chiesamonti is 100% Sangiovese from a 1.3-hectare parcel called “Chiesa Monte,” three kilometers from Le Boncie and just outside the limit of Castelnuovo Berardegna. This used to be blended into the ‘Cinque’ bottling, but since 2018 Giovanna now feels these vines merit bottling separately. Gets better each vintage.

The 2022 Montevertine Rosso di Toscana is a benchmark expression of Tuscan Sangiovese, blended with small amounts of indigenous Canaiolo and Colorino, classified as an IGT. Hailing from the high-altitude vineyards of Radda in Chianti, its stony, marl and alberese soils, combined with significant diurnal shifts, contribute to the wine's inherent elegance and fresh profile. Montevertine, under the Manetti family, is renowned for its steadfast dedication to traditional winemaking, employing native yeasts in cement vats and extended aging in large Slavonian oak botti to preserve the purity of fruit and terroir. Despite a warm 2022 growing season in Tuscany, timely late-season rains and Montevertine's skilled vineyard management yielded a wine of remarkable balance, concentration, and vibrant freshness. This ensures the 2022 vintage remains a taut, authentic, and compelling representation of Radda's unique Sangiovese.

Sean O'Callaghan has a conviction that Sangiovese at altitude can produce something closer to Burgundy than to the big and extracted wines the market spent decades chasing.
Il Guercio is the fullest expression of that thinking. The fruit comes from a single terraced vineyard in Gaiole, near Lamole, farmed organically and biodynamically at roughly 650 meters, some of the highest ground in Chianti Classico. Old vines, late harvest, foot-stomped and fermented in open bins with roughly thirty percent whole cluster. Four months of maceration. Twelve months in cement. Unfiltered, unfined, and bottled outside the DOCG because Sean has never needed the Consorzio's permission to make a great wine. What comes out of the bottle is vibrant, lifted, and immediately compelling: aromatic red fruit, dried florals, white pepper, and an acidity that pulls everything into focus. Open it tonight and enjoy it fully, knowing it will only integrate and evolve over the next decade.
