The ancient Marquiliani estate dates to the Genoese era and has been farmed by the Amalric family since the 1950s. Here the flatland begins rising dramatically towards the Corsican mountains, creating a terroir that has enjoyed a legacy of great vine growing for centuries. The schist and granite soils combined with cool nights and a higher altitude setting creates the ideal environment for growing grapes capable of producing memorable, energetic wines with a distinct sense of place. Anne Amalric's Gris de Marquiliani is the perfect embodiment of the potential of this special property: lithe, energetic, and as her importer, Kermit Lynch, describes it, “like drinking a cloud.” The 2 hectares of Sciaccarellu and Syrah vines selected to produce this cuvée are located in a cooler microclimate than their neighboring parcels and are picked by hand. The grapes (95% Sciaccarellu/5% Syrah) are pressed and then decanted for 72 hours before fermentation, which finishes without malolactic, preserving the tension in this haunting, harmonious example. Sit down with a bottle over a few hours at the table and watch its quiet complexity unfold layer by layer, or just throw a chill on it and let it quench your thirst on a hot day. It’s equally at home in both settings.
