Quite simply one of the finest Franciacorta bottles out there. This can be great fun as a ringer in grower champagne tastings. Nicola Gatta is on a mission to show the world just how great well-farmed (organic and biodynamic), low-intervention, and low sulfur champagne-method Franciacorta can be. He works with only two grapes: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Gatta's vines are located in Gussago, a hilly vineyard site rich in both gypsum, limestone, and clay which is ideally adapted to champagne-method sparkling wine.In his quest to make the finest wine possible, he was forced to part ways with the Franciacorta DOCG, as they tried to restrict and control how he produced his sparkling wine (this is why his wines are labeled as Vino Spumante, and bear no mentioned of Franciacorta). The base of this wine is 30% 2017, with the remainder from a solera stretching from 2010-2016. This has a very pretty, clean mineral nose, and opens to reveal umami aromas on the palate with a lovely creaminess to the wine's texture and body. Nicola uses minimal sulfur and his wines have a wild lively character to them, along with a notably squeaky clean refinement that's integral to their balance. A joyous discovery!
