Yoichi is Nikka’s first ever distillery, built in 1934 when Masataka Taketsuru returned from learning the ins and outs of making ‘e’-less whisky the right way in Scotland. Built in coastal Hokkaido to emulate the saline-tinged aging of conditions of Scotland, this malt whisky is made in coal-fired stills and has pleasant hints of peat and smoke, whiffs of ocean brine, a touch of white flowers, and a nutty mid palate. This is the most ‘Scotch-y’ of Nikka’s offerings.
