We would not hesitate to name this family domaine in Gevrey-Chambertin, Harmand-Geoffroy, as one of the most consistently excellent addresses in this famous village today. Philippe Harmand was handed the keys to the cellar in 2006, and the character of the wines has remained largely consistent with those of his talented father, Gerard. It is evident, though, that Philippe has been striving for more elegance and finesse as he finds his own signature style. He’s not trying to make something at odds with Gevrey’s inherent muscle & spice, just to present it with lighter, more sensitive brushstrokes. Philippe owns .7 hectares of 40-90+ year old, south facing vines in Lavaux. It’s on the darker fruited end of the spectrum, but the tannins are perfectly ripe and velvety and give it some early appeal. This is first rate stuff that will improve in the cellar for years to come and age gracefully for many decades beyond.
