An incredibly exciting new address for elegant Loire Cab Franc from one of the winemakers at legendary Clos Rougeard. Etienne also learned his craft from other highly reputed addresses—Sylvain Pataille, Bernard Baudry, and his stepfather Romain Guiberteau. If that’s not a distinguished Loire pedigree, I don’t know what counts as one. This wine hails from a 1.3ha vineyard site that was a family heirloom, and it’s quite unique given its rarely encountered soil: oxidized Jurassic limestone. As limestone decomposes, it slowly forms iron compounds. The vast majority of soils in the Saumur area are instead made from a freshwater limestone known as tuffeau from the Cretaceous era. Etienne is also unique in his use of whole-cluster fermentation; he’ll often include up to 35% whole bunches. Many other winemakers are keen to keep the additional green aromas typical to Cabernet Franc in check with destemmed fruit, but Etienne sees a different path to producing an ethereal and elegant wine. -Jonny Lips
