Agnès Corbon took the reins of Champagne Corbon from her father Claude in 2006 after he’d spent 35 years making his own mark at their family estate. Claude was a third-generation grower who’d previously taken over the estate in 1971.
Agnès followed in the footsteps of her father Claude in nearly every respect, save for two decisions. The first was a change to Diam corks just as she began in 2006 (96% reliability for natural corks just isn’t good enough, she remarked — such is her perfectionist obsession) and the second was an insistence on barrel-fermenting some of her Champagnes, which Claude initially took issue with, but was later forced to recognize as a wise decision upon sampling the results.
The majority of the Corbon family vineyard holdings are in the Vallée de la Marne, and the last third of their vineyard holdings are in the cherished Côte des Blancs Grand Cru town of Avize. Nearly all the Marne fruit is sold off to négoce, whereas Agnès Corbon estate bottles their precious Avize fruit, crafting stately Blanc de Blancs which consistently overdeliver for the price.
How this tiny estate has managed to remain under the radar of so many collectors is most likely a reflection of their meager production; very few bottles ever make it to our shores.
