Domaine Thibert: One of the Mâconnais' Most Compelling Producers

Christophe Thibert at Domaine Thibert

Impressive wines from 2023, with MWC storage client pricing included.

The Mâconnais has long been a source for affordable White Burgundy. Over the last ten years, however, the region has undergone a revolution in quality and terroir recognition. Where once there were a mere handful of compelling producers and zero Premier Crus, there are now dozens of quality-minded vignerons lavishing their sloping, limestone-rich vineyards with the kind of attention once reserved solely for villages like Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet.

How does that benefit the wine drinker? World-class Burgundy at a fraction of the Côte d’Or price.

I had never experienced Domaine Thibert until I tasted their delicious 2022 Saint-Véran ‘Bois de Fée’ about four months ago. As it turns out, critics like Neal Martin, William Kelley, and Allen Meadows have been following Thibert closely for years. The Thiberts have roots in the region dating back centuries, but the true push for elite quality began when Christophe Thibert and his sister Sandrine took over the family domaine.

Soil structure in the MâconnaisToday, the vineyards are farmed organically and harvested strictly by hand; new oak is kept to a modest maximum of 20%; and, while not officially certified biodynamic (just slightly witchy), bottling is timed to the lunar calendar. Like other Mâconnais revolutionaries, they celebrate their best terroirs by farming them with respect and bottling each site individually.

These wines are a joy to drink. In their youth, they are explosive and delicious, but that nervy backbone of acidity and impressive length lend themselves to evolution in the cellar. Across the lineup, from the soon-to-be Premier Cru Les Longeays to the single-vineyard Saint-Vérans, there is serious concentration that will easily evolve in bottle for well beyond a decade. Of the two Saint-Vérans, Champ Rond is the riper, more forward and generous style, while Bois de Fée is more structured, mineral, and layered, with a greater ability to age.

Right now, exploring the Mâconnais excites me far more than Côte d’Or pricing depresses me; the future is remarkably bright in this burgeoning region.

The Wines

2023 Domaine Thibert, Pouilly-Vinzelles, Les Longeays - $64.99/btl
6+ btls: $61.74/btl | 12+ btls or storage: $58.49/btl

Remember when you bought that designer coat or bag on the cheap, right before the brand exploded and the price quadrupled? That is the story with Les Longeays. This spectacular terroir officially enters Premier Cru territory with the 2024 harvest, almost certainly at a much higher price tag. Rooted in deep clay-limestone soils, Les Longeays displays striking density, orchard fruit, and smoky mineral depth. This is your final chance to own this benchmark site at village-level pricing.

2023 Domaine Thibert, Saint-Véran, Champ Rond - $58.99/btl
6+ btls: $56.04/btl | 12+ btls or storage: $53.09/btl

Sourced from a high-altitude limestone plateau in the village of Leynes, Champ Rond is the riper, more forward of the two Saint-Vérans: generous, open-knit, and wonderfully approachable right now. Electric energy, salinity, and bright citrus drive keep all that fruit in focus, while a crushed-chalk backbone and oyster-shell snap give it purity and lift. Delicious today, and effortlessly cellar-worthy.

2023 Domaine Thibert, Saint-Véran, Bois de Fée - $64.99/btl
6+ btls: $61.74/btl | 12+ btls or storage: $58.49/btl

Bois de Fée sits in the village of Chasselas within Saint-Véran on soils rich in Bajocian limestone and veins of iron. Where Champ Rond is open and generous, Bois de Fée is the more structured, mineral, and layered of the pair, delivering a broader, richer mid-palate framed by lip-smacking acidity. Expect white flowers, ripe orchard pear, fresh hazelnut, and an intensely delineated, chalky finish. This is the Saint-Véran to lay down.
