The 2024 Domaine Gour de Chaulé Côtes du Rhône Rouge La Vigneronne is nearly incognito Vacqueyras.
Vacqueyras may not carry the same fame as its neighbors, Gigondas or Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but it has no shortage of quality. Some of my favorite Southern Rhône wines come from this hidden gem.
In 1990, Vacqueyras earned its own appellation, recognizing its distinct terroir and pedigree above the broader regional rules. For perspective, a standard Côtes-du-Rhône can source fruit across 171 communes spanning both the Northern and Southern Rhône. This bottle sports the humble Côtes-du-Rhône label, yet it comes from just two neighboring villages, one of them being Vacqueyras itself. (If Gour de Chaulé had left out the parcel in Violès, they could have sold this under the pricier Vacqueyras banner!)
This is essentially a declassified wine. The family's explanation: "We're from Gigondas. We don't promote Vacqueyras!"
Driven by 90% Grenache, it bursts with juicy black cherries and wild herbs, with the kind of depth and complexity you rarely see at this price.
