Fratelli Alessandria Barolo 21s: Ethereal, Fragrant and Brilliantly Focused

Fratelli Alessandria Barolo 21s: Ethereal, Fragrant and Brilliantly Focused
Ethereal, fragrant, and brilliantly focused.
These are the traits I look for in world-class Nebbiolo, and no one captures them quite like Fratelli Alessandria. After years cutting my teeth at legendary Italian wine programs Maialino and Marta, I’ve seen many producers chase trends—but the Alessandria family has remained steadfast in their commitment to balance and sense of place.
These wines maintain the striking energy and haunting aromatics that are quintessential Verduno. Located along Barolo's northernmost limits, Verduno benefits from cooling breezes coming off the Tanaro River, preserving the delicate aromatics. Along with the cooling breezes, the Marne di Sant'Agata soils, of sand, silt, and limestone, impart an ethereal lightness and silky fine-grained tannin.
If you are looking for Barolo that prioritizes finesse over power, I cannot recommend these wines enough. Especially in 2021. They are far more approachable in their youth than the 2019s, yet they carry the weight and acidity of a truly classic vintage.

Fratelli Alessandria
2021 Barolo, Comune di Verduno - 12+ btls @ $68.99/btl ($62.09 with case discount)
A traditional blend of five distinct vineyard sites within the village: Pisapola, Campasso, Riva Rocca, Boscatto, and Rocche dell’Olmo. Soil is primarily Marne di Sant’Agata, which gives the wine its signature elegance and mineral finish.
2021 Barolo, San Lorenzo di Verduno - 12+ btls @ $95.99/btl
Sourced from the family's 0.8-hectare holding in the San Lorenzo MGA, of 30-year-old vines located just below the legendary Monvigliero hill. The soil is calcareous limestone with a higher percentage of silt than the surrounding hills, which results in a more forward fruit profile and intense floral aromatics.
2021 Barolo, Monvigliero - 12+ btls @ $128/btl
If you have followed the meteoric rise of G.B. Burlotto, you know their Monvigliero has entered the stratosphere of "unicorn" pricing. Here is the secret: The Alessandria and Burlotto families are cousins, and Fratelli Alessandria’s 1.4-hectare slice of this legendary vineyard is just as historic. Sourced from vines averaging over 50 years old, this wine offers depth and complexity that rival its famous neighbor at less than one-third the price. This is the bottle I buy to "scratch the itch" for Monvigliero and its resonant aroma of white pepper, olive tapenade, and crushed rose petals.
The Kicker: Barolo authority Antonio Galloni just hailed this as "one of the potential wines of the vintage." At this price, it isn't just a smart buy—it’s a heist.
2021 Barolo, Comune di Verduno - Magnum - 6 Mags @ $145/mag ($130.50 with case discount)
2021 Barolo, San Lorenzo di Verduno - Magnum - 6 Mags @ $210/mag
