Rheinhessen refracted through the prism of the Mosel.

Coming off the Vom Boden portfolio tasting this past week, a handful of wines have been living rent-free in my head ever since. Right at the top of that lineup of scrumptious juice? Julian Haart's 2025 Riesling Rote Erden, an absolute stunner I haven't stopped obsessing over all week.

There is no question that Julian Haart makes some of the most impressive wines in the Mosel, and he rightfully should. He apprenticed with Egon Müller, Klaus Peter Keller, and Werner Schönleber. As Stephen Bitterolf, owner of Haart's Importer VomBoden aptly stated, “That's like learning to draw under da Vinci, Picasso, and Warhol.”

2025 Rote Erden is a brilliant byproduct of a Haart x Keller terroir exchange. Beginning with the 2018 vintage, Haart handed over his fabled Piesporter Schubertslay vineyard in return for prime Rheinhessen dirt, including Keller's Frauenberg vineyard. While that fruit typically goes into ultra-rare GG bottlings available only in mixed GG cases, Haart used all his Frauenberg fruit, along with tiny quantities from Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott, to produce this single “village-level” release. In essence, it's GG juice at a fraction of the cost, farmed by an icon and vinified by an undeniable star.

So what happens when the Mosel's golden boy crafts wine from Rheinhessen terroir farmed by the legendary Klaus Peter Keller? It carries the very same magic Haart conjures on his home turf: electrifyingly pure fruit (think crisp white peach and tart green apple) driven by surging mineral intensity, yet staying strikingly svelte and wildly focused. It doesn't taste like the Mosel, nor should it. This is the Rheinhessen refracted through the prism of the Mosel.

Would I buy one? Buy at least three. This wine is a joy to drink now, but you will want a few bottles stashed away to enjoy over the next 5-10 years.
