Forjas del Salnes

If you want to know what benchmark Albarino tastes like, look no further. Forjas del Salnes is a legendary project spearheaded by Rodrigo Mendez and the iconic winemaker Raul Perez. Their Leirana cuvee is famous for its incredible ocean-driven salinity and bracing freshness. Grown right near the Atlantic, it is bright, zippy, and loaded with notes of crisp citrus and crushed sea salt. It is exactly what you want to be drinking with oysters or fresh seafood.

There is a great story behind this one. For years, a local cooperative was watching their ancient vines get torn up by real estate developers to build suburban houses. To stop the bleeding, they brought in Dani Landi and Fernando Garcia, the guys behind Comando G, to overhaul their winemaking. They completely turned things around. This is a gorgeous, hand-harvested Garnacha grown in pure granitic sand. They age it entirely in concrete, which keeps the fruit tasting incredibly fresh and bright. It is an amazing value for the quality, and buying a bottle actually helps these local growers keep their historic vineyards in the dirt where they belong.
