Stéphane Tissot is a dedicated, exacting biodynamic producer, contagiously passionate about his wines and about the great history of the Jura. He is unfailingly enthusiastic about his own bottles, and rightfully so, but he is also a tireless ambassador for the region as a whole. You’ll find his wines in top stores and restaurants across France and the US, but also across nearly every country in western Europe, Scandinavia & the UK, not to mention the Czech Republic, Poland, Latvia, Canada, Bermuda, New Zealand and Australia, among others. Even many of the most famous growers in Burgundy do not have that kind of broad reach. We couldn’t think of a better way for the world to be introduced to this tiny little region than through Stephane’s fascinating bottles, and the Jura as a whole is certainly indebted to him for spreading the gospel.
The Tissot stable reflects the great diversity of the styles and grapes of the region. To kick things off, Stéphane makes a delicious NV Extra Brut Crémant that would give most NV Champagne at twice the price a run for its money. On the white side, we’re very partial to his intensely mineral, laser beam Chardonnay cuvées from several different parcels. On the red side, Stéphane works with all three grapes – Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir. His Vin Jaunes, made in the oxidative style that is traditional in the region, are easily among the very best we’ve ever tasted. Adventurous drinkers, or really anyone who appreciates great wines, owe it to themselves to try these wines alongside a big hunk of comté cheese. And last but not least, his Pinot Noir Macvin, fortified with marc made from his own grape skins, is quite possibly the most fun thing you could ever drink at the end of a great meal.
Stéphane is a world class producer, respectful of tradition but always with an eye for improvement and innovation. He’s incredibly dialed in these days and his wines have never been better. Jura fans and all fans of elegant, precise, food friendly wines should not sleep on these special bottles.
