MWC Summer Tasting Series: Burgundy

Is Burgundy the world’s greatest wine region? You could make the argument, that’s for sure! At their best, the wines possess an elegance and beauty that is all but unmatched anywhere else. The reds, typically bright, silky and perfumed, made Pinot Noir a household name. And the whites did the same for Chardonnay – and while they range from delicate to powerful, they almost always have great finesse and mineral character.                                                                                                                                                       We’d love to share our admiration of Burgundy with you Thursday, June 27th from 5:30pm-7:30pm by pouring some favorites in-store:

2022 Domaine Gerard Seguin - Bourgogne Rouge, Cuvee Chantal – $36/btl                This Bourgogne comes from vines located in the village of Chambolle-Musigny, and it shows some Chambolle-like qualities with its racy red fruit and light body.

2021 Famille Paquet - Macon-Prisse, Le Clos – $29.99/btl or $26.99 in a mixed case  Paquet has been making very good, well-priced Macon wine for some time now, but in the last few years the quality has jumped even higher, making this one of the best value domaines in all of Burgundy. ‘Le Clos’ comes from a single-parcel of biodynamically-farmed grapes in the village of Prisse. It’s a crisp and saline dry white with subtle creaminess.

2021 Philippe Jouan - Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux – $118/btl                         Phillipe Jouan is a talented, traditional vigneron based in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, which is sandwiched between Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin. Jouan makes village-level wines from all three. ‘Aux Echezeaux’, which shares two borders with Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin, might be the best of them; it’s made from 80-year-old vines.

2021 Sylvain Morey - Chassagne-Montrachet – $108/btl                                               Morey is a young winemaker who recently took over the family domaine from his father, Jean-Marc. He’s already making fabulous wine, as evidenced by his beautifully balanced and polished Chassagne-Montrachet. 2021 was a cool vintage that made for wonderfully vibrant whites.
