Dominio del Águila’s Picaro Clarete is perhaps better thought of as a very light red wine rather than a deeply colored rosé. Comparing it to Provence rosé misses the point; instead of being thirst quenching on a hot summer day, it is vinous and complex and well suited to a variety of foods. This Clarete is a blend of Albillo and Tempranillo that are co-fermented on the skins for 2 days before going into barrels where it then ages for a full year. The nose is redolent with blood orange and berry fruit with just a touch of roses and spice. There are whispery tannins on the palate with lifted acidity; it is quite suave for a pink wine and very well balanced without any residual sugar. This would be perfect for a platter of charcuterie, grilled lamb sausage, roasted veggies, or slightly spicy food.
