If you were wondering what the shortcut is for sourcing the finest, most delicate Sangiovese in Tuscany, the answer is actually quite simple: make sure it grew in the soils of Radda in Chianti.
Radda is one of the three original sites for Chianti in between Siena and Florence. The high elevation vineyard sites, surrounding forest, and the rocky soils combine to produce a Sangiovese unlike any other. There’s something so very lively and lifted on the finish, and just plain elegant about Radda Sangiovese. Where other Sangiovese can feel heavier, and bring to mind dark cherries and charred earth, these are irrepressibly bright, nimble, and tangy. These are ready to accompany an even broader set of foods.
As many locals already know, the Tenuta di Carleone Chianti Classico has become a mainstay here at the shop, beloved by staff and clients alike. The wine is difficult to rival at its price point.
The Il Guercio bottling is a nobler, rarer bottling, and a more unique expression of this estate’s brilliance. A critic we respect, Antonio Galloni, sums it up nicely:
