Carcavelos is a rare dessert wine made just west of Lisbon in Portugual in a similar mold to Madeira. The appellation now covers a mere 25 hectares in which there is only a single active producer. Quinta dos Pesos was a boutique producer of Carcavelos who rarely commercialized the wines outside of Portugal and eventually ceased operation in 2005. The current bottlings were discovered and purchased from barrel by an American importer in the past few years.
