Domaine Pierre Morey is one of our favorite addresses in Meursault that amazingly still remains something of an insider property in Burgundy. The domaine has deep roots in Burgundy, with the family’s history stretching back to 1793 and is profoundly intertwined with legendary properties like Domaine des Comte Lafon and Domaine Leflaive. The estate was founded in 1971 when the family was still sharecropping prime 1er cru parcels for Lafon in Meursault, an arrangement that lasted until 1984. Shortly after the end of that agreement, Pierre was the cellar master at Domaine Leflaive from 1988 until 2008 and was in charge of not only of the winemaking but also the estate's vineyards. It was Pierre Morey who made legendary wines like Leflaive’s 1992 Montrachet, still considered to be one of the great white Burgundies of modern times. Domaine Pierre Morey converted first to organic and then biodynamic farming in 1997, marking him as one of the first properties to fully convert to biodynamics in the region. Despite the history and pedigree of the estate, the wines always seem to fly just under the radar here.
Pierre Morey makes immensely appealing Burgundy that consistently retains a distinct sense of place. The wines certainly don’t scream out of the glass, but they wash over you with an unmistakable balance that is exactly what we hope for whenever we pull a cork. As Anne Morey, Pierre’s daughter, has joined the estate, the domaine’s wines have improved and feel increasingly refined with each passing vintage. Anne raised 2006 and 2009 Meursault Hospice de Beaune barrels for Manhattan Wine Company which were outstanding; she is a prolific winemaker in her own right. We haven't been shy about how much we’ve enjoyed the 2017 vintage in Burgundy for both red and white wines, and the wines of Domaine Pierre Morey are no exception. While the estate gets more attention for their whites, the '17 reds we’ve tasted have been especially successful. This is a special domaine with a rich history, whose wines continue to set a new benchmark with each release.
