There are few family domaines in Burgundy that can match the breadth of holdings held by Aude and Guillaume Lavolée at Domaine Génot-Boulanger. They are the 4th generation in charge of the property, which now spans 22ha across 30 different appellations. The couple themselves are measured and reserved, and their wines reflect this poise and grace. We’re always on the hunt for smartly priced, drinking Burgundy and these wines consistently fit the bill - brilliant, clean and true to place.

The winemaking at Génot-Boulanger has much in common with many of our favorite properties in the region – careful organic farming, native yeast fermentations, gentle extractions, and judicious new oak influence. After a little more than a decade in charge, Aude and Guillaume have clearly hit their stride. We’ve received the last of their '17 vintage and are pleased to share them with you today. We tasted these cuvées with Guillaume himself at our shop, and the distinctions between each individual plot could not have been clearer, and are an impressive testament to the couple’s tireless work. We encourage you to try these lovely wines. Sadly, we’re coming to the end of the ’17 vintage as ‘18s begin to roll in, and so here’s a great opportunity to stock up on more ‘17s to enjoy now and over the medium term.

Cheers,

Génot-Boulanger - Meursault, Meix Chavaux 2017 (750ml)

$89.99 | 24+ Available

This is a wonderfully transparent wine from a producer who seems to be going from strength to strength over the past few vintages. Meix Chavaux sits in the northern part of the Meursault village, adjoining Luchets and Chevalieres on the border of Auxey-Duresses. The wine is a bit sleeker than some of Génot-Boulanger’s other white bottlings, showing just a whisper of oak with a creamier texture. It still retains a lifted acidity to balance out its richer frame, with spiced golden apples and just a touch of tart peach. When we tasted this bottle in the fall, the Meix Chavaux was extremely appealing and remains a very smartly priced bottle. 15% New oak, barrel fermented, and aged in barrel for 12 months without racking or bâtonnage.

Génot-Boulanger - Chassagne-Montrachet, 1er Cru Les Vergers 2017 (750ml)

$99.00 | 24+ Available

Les Vergers is a mid-slope parcel in Chassagne-Montrachet that has notably shallow soil, resulting in wines that are leaner than is typical of the village. Génot-Boulanger’s 2017 Les Vergers shows more of a white fruit character with lifted aromatics and distinct notes of citrus with a more mineral focus on the palate. This is a very fine, elegant white Burgundy that stands as an extremely well valued 1er cru. 15% New oak, barrel fermented, and aged in barrel for 12 months without racking or bâtonnage.

Génot-Boulanger - Meursault, 1er Cru Les Bouchères 2017 (750ml)

$145.00 | 21 Available

The Bouchères vineyard is a parcel that is considered amongst the best sites in Meursault. It is generally plusher and softer than its neighbor Poruzot, and is usually the first in the village to be picked. Génot-Boulanger’s 2017 Bouchères shows quite a bit less reserve than the famous Roulot bottling from the same vintage, without lacking complexity in any way. The nose is explosive with yellow and white flowers, ripe orchard fruit, and just a touch of stone fruit. The texture is airy, rather than lush with an elegant silken finish. There is an unmistakable tension in the wines that is sure to allow it to age gracefully for those who are patient enough to wait. Considering that Génot-Boulanger’s Bouchères is around 1 / 3 the price of the J M Roulot bottling, there is a lot of upside on this wine down the road. 15% New oak, barrel fermented, aged in barrel for 12 months without racking or bâtonnage.

Génot-Boulanger - Chambolle-Musigny 2017 (750ml)

$99.00 | 24+ Available

Génot-Boulanger’s Chambolle-Musigny parcel is found in the southern end of the village, an area that tends to yield more elegant expressions of Chambolle. The vineyard was recently replanted to Pinot Fin, the local small-berried Pinot Noir that has come back into favor after being largely abandoned due to its low yields, despite the high quality of its fruit. The wine shows beautiful lifted aromatics with pure red fruit and roses with just a hint of rosemary on the nose. Quite silky and plush on the palate, but with great acidity and no hint of new oak. This wine was lovely when we tasted it in the fall, and will continue to blossom nicely over the next decade. Destemmed fruit, 10 - 15% new oak, barrel fermented, and aged in barrel for 12 months without racking.
