The rolling hills of Dogliani viewed from San Fereolo's vineyards - Photo taken by Blake Johnson

San Fereolo is a pioneering biodynamic estate based high in the hills of Dogliani, a region just south of Barolo that is generally regarded as a grand cru site for the Dolcetto grape. Nicoletta Bocca founded the property and is highly regarded for her Dolcetto wines, but today we would like instead to spotlight her brilliant 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo Il Provinciale. The wine captured so much of what we love about the outstanding 2016 vintage; it showcases ripe fruit that remained fresh and balanced with well developed structure that will allow it to age beautifully. Simply put, the 2016 Il Provinciale could stand up easily to many Barolos and it’s no surprise why. While half the fruit is from Nicoletta's small plot of Nebbiolo in Dogliani, the other half is drawn from a friend’s estate in Serralunga d'Alba in Barolo. The wine is also treated like a Barolo in the cellar with a 30-day maceration on the skins and 2 years elevage in big botti before bottling. The result is such a gorgeous bottle of wine, doubly so when you consider the extremely modest price tag. Bravo Nicoletta!

We are offering a 10% discount on purchases of 6 bottles or more of San Fereolo's 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo Il Provinciale now through midnight, Sunday 6/13.  Add 6 bottles to your cart and the discount will automatically apply. The magnums are not discountable as stock is extremely limited.

Il Provinciale is named in honor of a book written by Nicoletta's father, a noted Italian essayist. The wine is made like great traditional Barolo, with long macerations and 2 years aging in big botti. Tannins are present with a subtle, earthy character giving this wine a more serious feel but there is plenty of succulent fruit to keep things lively. Expect vibrant cherries, blood oranges, roses, and just a hint of tar strutting out of the glass braced by lively acidity. There's clearly a lot to come from this bottle, but it's hard to resist even now. This is a complex and contemplative wine that drinks far above its modest price tag.
