1993 Barbeito, Sercial Frasqueira Madeira

Barbeito is one of Madeira’s most important modern houses, known for bottlings that feel precise, high-acid and less heavy than the old-school stereotype. Sercial is the driest of the noble Madeira grapes, and Frasqueira means this is a single-vintage wine aged at least 20 years in cask before release. That long canteiro aging concentrates the wine while keeping the acidity alive.

This 1993 Sercial is bone dry, with quince, salted caramel, walnut, pine and a light varnish note. The appeal is the contrast: decades of oxidative aging, but still sharp, salty and alive. Serve slightly chilled with almonds, aged cheeses, consommé, mushroom dishes or even after dinner when you want something dry instead of sweet.
