2014 CVNE, Gran Reserva Vina Real, Rioja

Founded in 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers, the Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE) remains under the stewardship of the founding family in the historic station neighborhood of Haro. This wine is made from Tempranillo and Graciano grapes grown in the clay-limestone soils of the Rioja Alavesa, where the vineyards feature head-trained vines. In the glass, it displays a deep ruby color with distinct aromas of dried berry fruit, tobacco leaf, and sweet spice, supported by a structured, full-bodied mouthfeel. The 2014 vintage in Rioja required diligent vineyard management to navigate a heterogeneous growing season, resulting in a wine that relies on balanced acidity and firm character. Given its extended aging, this bottle is well-integrated and provides a reliable example of traditional Rioja that has reached a mature, accessible stage for drinking now.
