2014 Domaine Meo Camuzet, Vosne-Romanee, 1er Cru Les Chaumes

Les Chaumes sits at the southern edge of Vosne-Romanée, just above Nuits-Saint-Georges and below La Tâche and Malconsorts. Méo-Camuzet farms about four acres here across two plots on deeper clay soils, which gives the wine more body than the higher, thinner-soiled Vosne premiers crus. The site has an east-facing exposure and enough water-holding capacity to ripen well without losing the village’s spice and polish.

Méo-Camuzet’s modern identity is tied to Jean-Nicolas Méo taking back family vineyards that had long been farmed by métayeurs, including Henri Jayer, who helped guide the domaine in the 1980s. The wines are fully destemmed, built through careful extraction and raised in barrel with new oak scaled to the cru. In 2014, Les Chaumes has reached a good point: dark cherry, spice, tea and earth, with the clay giving it flesh and the vintage keeping the frame intact.
