2016 Roagna, Barolo, Pira

The Roagna estate, a family-run producer with roots in Piedmont dating back to the 19th century, manages their historic Pira vineyard located in the village of Castiglione Falletto. This monopole site features complex soils composed of alternating layers of limestone, marl, and sand, where they produce this wine made from Nebbiolo vines that average 25 to 50 years of age. In the glass, it reveals focused aromas of red cherry, dried rose petals, and savory earth, held together by a firm, sinewy tannic structure and precise acidity. The 2016 vintage provided a long, stable growing season that allowed the fruit to ripen slowly, resulting in a wine defined by exceptional balance and intensity. This is a well-structured bottling that is currently beginning to open up, yet it remains firmly built for long-term cellaring.
