2016 Vignalta, Veneto IGT, Marrano

The 2016 Vignalta Marrano is a Merlot-Cabernet blend from Colli Euganei, an underappreciated DOC known for volcanic limestone soils. Vigneron Lucio Gomiero channeled his affinity for Bordeaux to produce Italian offerings of the same ilk. As one of the region's trailblazers, Gomiero targeted high-elevation sites and secured choice plots. His savviness and experience shine in this 2016 Marrano; nearly a decade on, it offers a lifted, full body that marries aging qualities with compelling freshness, with undertones of dark fruit and subtle spice. When you want something with a bit more body than Pinot, Sangiovese, and that also manages to be very poised and easy to drink. Good for burger/steak nights.
