Zind-Humbrecht is the reference point for Alsace, full stop. Olivier Humbrecht has farmed biodynamically since 2002 with a conviction that the vineyard, not the winemaker, should dictate what ends up in the bottle. Windsbuhl sits high above Hunawihr, east to south facing, on Muschelkalk limestone loaded with magnesium — a soil type that gives the wine its distinctive mineral precision and naturally holds back ripening, allowing the fruit to develop slowly and completely.

The 2017 vintage was punishing early on — severe spring frosts tore through the yields — but the summer that followed was warm and dry, tempered by cool nights that kept acidity intact. Less fruit on the vine often means more concentration in what remains, and that is exactly what happened here. The wine went through natural fermentation and extended lees aging without intervention, and the result is a Gewurztraminer of uncommon structure — dense and richly aromatic, all rose petal and spice, but with an acid-driven tension underneath that keeps it focused and very much alive. This is a wine built to age, and it is only beginning to show what it can do.
