2018 Domaine Roger Belland, Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, 1er Cru Morgeot Clos Pitois

Clos Pitois is a monopole within Morgeot, one of the broad, clay-heavy premier cru sectors on the southern side of Chassagne-Montrachet. Belland’s parcel sits on deeper soils than the higher limestone sites above the village, which gives the red wines more color, fruit and structure than people often expect from Chassagne.

Roger Belland’s style is direct and traditional: destemmed fruit, fermentation in tank and aging in barrel without trying to make the wine glossy. 2018 was a warm year, so this leans into dark cherry, plum and earth, with enough Morgeot grip to work well with roast chicken, pork, mushrooms or anything with a little char.
