2018 Rhys, Horseshoe Vineyard Syrah, Santa Cruz Mountains

Rhys Vineyards operates in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where they utilize biodynamic farming practices to manage seven estate sites, including the Horseshoe Vineyard they developed in 2004. This vineyard is planted on diatomaceous shale with intermingled limestone at elevations ranging from 1,360 to 1,610 feet and is made from 100% Syrah. In the glass, this wine shows focused notes of blackberry, black olive, and cracked pepper, with a sinewy, structured palate defined by crushed granite minerality. The 2018 vintage provided a long, cool growing season that allowed for slow ripening and deep flavor development while maintaining natural acidity. This bottle is built for the cellar and will reward patience, though it is approachable with a thorough decant.
