2020 Aubert, Larry Hyde & Sons Chardonnay, Los Carneros

Mark Aubert’s winemaking philosophy centers on minimal intervention, utilizing native yeast fermentations and allowing full malolactic conversion in barrel with no lees stirring, all to articulate pure site expression in his Chardonnay program. The Larry Hyde & Sons Vineyard, planted by Larry Hyde in 1979 in Los Carneros, is distinctly characterized as "a warm spot in a cool place," with Haire Loam Clay soils benefiting from the cooling maritime influence of San Pablo Bay, promoting extended hang-time and concentrated fruit from deep-rooted vines. Despite the challenges of the 2020 growing season, the mild summer in Carneros preserved ideal conditions, and the Hyde fruit was harvested without fire impact, resulting in excellent physiological ripeness. This vintage yields a full-bodied Chardonnay exhibiting a racy backbone, creamy texture, and bright, saline-driven tension, showcasing immense depth and architectural integrity on the palate.
