2020 Praesidium, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva

While Praesidium shares the same low-intervention, artisanal ethos as other stars of the region, it offers a distinctly different expression of the grape due to its extreme terroir and specific cellar practices. Praesidium is in the inland province of L'Aquila, specifically in the Valle Peligna (the ancestral home of the Montepulciano grape) around the village of Prezza. This is high-altitude, steep Apennine mountain terroir. The vines are subjected to large diurnal temperature swings (warm days, very cold nights) and to rocky, calcareous clay soils. As a result, Praesidium produces a true "mountain wine" vs lower hills. In the glass, it shows an intense ruby color with savory notes of blackberry, leather, and dried herbs supported by a firm, structured texture. The 2020 vintage provided a balanced growing season, allowing for a concentrated profile that emphasizes the wine’s natural depth. Perfect for weeknight dinners.
