2021 G.D. Vajra, Barolo, Ravera

Ravera is a significant Cru that spans parts of both Novello and Barolo communes. Vajra's parcels are in the southern amphitheater of Ravera, specifically within the Comune di Novello, at elevations between 300 and 380 meters above sea level. The soil here is very complex, “where marls of Tortonian origin mix with sandstones and clays of the Serravallian period.” This intricate geological makeup contributes to a wine that is both structured and aromatically rich. This wine has sneaky power with a reserved, taught, complex vibe. Tannins are ripe, fine, and present here with a stony, mineral character which leads me to believe this will be an extremely long-lived wine. There is great energy, life and vitality in this and clearly it will reward a bit of patience in the cellar, but I would still categorize this as a generous, extremely well-balanced wine.
