2022 Clos Canarelli, Bonifacio Rouge, Tarra di Sognu, VdF

Yves Canarelli is an incredible Corsican producer that I adore and have had the great pleasure to visit with numerous times over the years. The Canarelli winery is famous for their Figari wines which, like Ajaccio, is found in the southern part of the island of Corsica. Figari wines are famously grown on granit soils just like the wines you find in Ajaccio. However, in Bonifacio, the city and appellation at the very southern end of the island uniquely features limestone soils. There is a mineral streak and finesse to this cuvée that I adore. It’s made from 50% Carcaghjolu Neru, 40% Sciaccarellu, and 10% Minustellu. This would give Burgundy a run for its money in elegance and class yet has the stuffing and gravitas to appeal to a bolder wine drinker as well. Yves took a huge risk planting vines in Bonifacio and has made huge strides with these remarkable vineyards. I believe he is a pioneer and discovered perhaps the most sophisticated terroir in all of Corsica. He believes that as well which is why he named the wine “Tarra di Sognu” which translates to land of dreams or a play on terroir of my dreams. Super cool wine – will make you a Corsican wine believer very quickly!
