2022 Piemaggio, Chianti Classico, Le Fioraie

The Piemaggio estate is located in the Castellina in Chianti sub-zone, where the property’s history traces back to the 11th century and its current identity has been maintained by the same family lineage since 1954. These vineyards sit at altitudes between 380 and 480 meters, where the vines are rooted in mineral-rich alberese and galestro soils and made from a blend of 90% Sangiovese with 10% Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, and Colorino. While the 2022 vintage was marked by significant warmth, the estate’s thick surrounding forests and steady breezes helped preserve freshness and balance in the final wine. More than anything, we are struck by how intensely floral and aromatic this wine is – red roses and succulent cherry fruit jump out of the glass with a savory backing of rosemary and Tuscan herbs. The palate is ripe, silky, and quite juicy rendered in a pleasantly forward style that is hard to resist. The joys of Sangiovese are all captured here without any of the hard edges the grape can be prone to. This could certainly age for 5-10 years but we can’t imagine resisting opening it now given how delicious it is.
