2023 Bartolo Mascarello, Barbera d'Alba

Bartolo Mascarello is one of the great names of Barolo — a domaine that never wavered from its traditional convictions when the modernists were reshaping the region in the 1990s, and whose wines have vindicated that stubbornness completely. Maria Teresa Mascarello now runs the estate with the same uncompromising philosophy her father established: organic farming, glass-lined concrete vats, large neutral Slavonian oak botti, no concessions to fashion.

The Barbera comes from the San Lorenzo and Rué vineyards — the same Tortonian marl hillsides in the heart of the Barolo zone that produce the estate's flagship Nebbiolo. These are not afterthought sites set aside for the secondary wine. The altitude and the soils give the Barbera a verticality and mineral tension that separates it entirely from the fruit-forward, oak-driven style that defines much of the appellation. The 2023 vintage brought warmth and concentration through the summer, and the wine carries that mid-palate density, but the acidity is intact and the structure is lean and saline-driven. Barbera from this address drinks less like a weeknight wine and more like a statement of place.
