Romain and Gérald Delhome, fifth-generation growers who transitioned to estate bottling in 2019, are quickly becoming the names to watch for those who crave "vertebral," structurally-driven Northern Rhône Syrah. Operating from high-elevation parcels in the northern communes of Larnage and Gervans, the brothers prioritize organic farming to capture the cool, athletic soul of their 40-year-old vines. This "Boreal" bottling is born at 300 meters on south-facing slopes of sanded granite and fractured rock—a terroir that demands a lean, precise winemaking touch. By fully destemming the fruit and aging it largely in neutral oak and stainless steel, the Delhomes ensure that the raw, granitic character of the site is never muffled by wood.

The 2023 vintage was a masterclass in timing; a cooling September followed a fierce August heat spike, allowing the grapes to reach perfect ripeness while holding onto an exceptional sense of nerve and tension. The resulting wine eschews the plush, easy-going fruit often found in southern Crozes-Hermitage, opting instead for a vertical, savory density and fine-grained tannins. It is a Syrah of persistent energy and granite-inflected depth, finishing with a chiseled clarity that reflects the high-altitude breezes of its northern home. For those who love their Rhône wines with a bit of "mountain spine" and a lot of soul, this is a technical triumph.
