Jean-Pierre Monier and Philippe Perréol farm their Saint-Joseph holdings biodynamically — a meaningful commitment in the northern Rhône, where the steep granite terraces demand significant physical labor regardless of certification. The Châtelet lieu-dit sits high above Saint-Désirat on a south-facing slope where wind-blown loess covers deep granitic bedrock, a combination that strips away excess and forces the Syrah to find its character in the rock rather than the soil.

The 2023 vintage split the northern Saint-Joseph from the south — while late-season rains caused problems further down the appellation, the upper reaches of Saint-Désirat came through with exceptional phenolic balance and preserved acidity intact. In the cellar, the approach stays out of the wine's way: fully destemmed, twelve months in neutral tonneaux, nothing added. The result is a Syrah of real structural precision — fine-grained tannins, mid-palate density, and the kind of granite-driven tension that defines the northern Rhône at its most expressive. Saint-Joseph rarely gets the attention it deserves relative to Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage. This is a good argument for why it should.
