Chassagne-Montrachet built its reputation on white wine — but the reds from Clos Saint-Jean are one of the appellation's best kept secrets, and Thierry Pillot is making a quiet case that they deserve far more attention.
Thierry farms organically without making a fuss about certification — the philosophy is in the vineyard, not the label. Clos Saint-Jean's deep red clay and limestone soils give the Pinot Noir a natural density and grip that you don't find in lighter, sandier parts of the Côte de Beaune. This is Chassagne red with real substance.
Half whole-cluster fermentation adds a layer of spice and structural complexity without going into Burgundy-nerd territory. Fifteen percent new oak means the barrel is furniture, not flavor — the fruit stays front and center. The result is a wine with a genuine core of ripe, dark red fruit, framed by firm, snappy tannins and a freshness that 2023's warmth had no right to leave behind. But it did, and the wine is better for it.
