2023 Philippe Jouan, Coteaux Bourguignons, Cuvee Thomas

Based in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Philippe Jouan is a small, family-run estate where Philippe continues the low-intervention winemaking techniques passed down through five generations. This is 100% Pinot Noir from Morey-Saint-Denis, labeled down because of a road. This is, in fact, all Pinot Noir but is too far from the main road below Gevrey and Morey to be allowed the Bourgogne Rouge appellation. The autoroute, not the terroir, is the reason it says Côteaux Bourguignons. The grapes come from four parcels just below the autoroute in Morey, from 50-year-old vines.  In the glass, it shows a bright, transparent color with clear notes of red cherry, raspberry, and a subtle, earthy minerality that gives it a grounded, balanced structure. The 2023 growing season provided excellent freshness and energy, resulting in a wine with supple tannins and a clean, vibrant finish. This is an approachable, well-defined Burgundy that is ready to enjoy tonight, offering reliable quality and focus.
