The historic Castello di Verduno estate, situated in the northernmost commune of Barolo, is managed by Gabriella Burlotto and Franco Bianco, with winemaking helmed by Mario Andrion since 2000. The estate was instrumental in preserving Pelaverga and one of the first producers to replant vineyards for the variety in 1972. The fruit is organically farmed on the southeast-facing slopes of the Massara and Olmo districts in white, limestone-dominant soils.
In the cellar, Andrion utilizes native yeasts and minimal sulfur. Fermentation and ageing takes place in stainless steel without filtration to preserve the grape's bright, natural purity. The label features a drawing of poppies, known as "Basadone" in the local dialect. The term also translates to "a little kiss," referencing regional lore that considers Pelaverga an aphrodisiac. The 2024 vintage provided a favorable growing season that allowed for optimal ripening, resulting in a vibrant, light-to-medium-bodied red. It balances bright acidity and a smooth texture with vivid floral energy, wild strawberry, raspberry, and the variety's signature white pepper spice. It is an exceptionally fresh, highly drinkable alternative to more traditional Piedmontese reds.
