2025 Franz Gojer, Alto Adige, Vernatsch Alte Reben

Vernatsch (also called Schiava or Trollinger) is Alto Adige's signature light red—pale, low-tannin, and built for food. Franz Gojer's Alte Reben comes from old vines in the Karneid vineyard at 550–600 meters, where south-facing slopes and sandy porphyry soils yield transparency and snap. Expect sour cherry, red currant, almond skin, white pepper, and alpine herbs with a chillable frame. Fermented in stainless steel with minimal skin contact, It's serious because it's transparent, rooted in terroir, and unmistakably of Alto Adige. Pair with speck, cured pork, grilled fish, mushrooms, or mountain cheeses—anywhere a heavier red would overwhelm.
