2018 Domaine Lafarge Vial, Fleurie, La Joie du Palais - Magnum

Frédéric Lafarge and Chantal Vial apply their rigorous Burgundian viticultural philosophy to the granitic hills of Fleurie, farming their steep, high-altitude plots according to certified organic and biodynamic principles. For this cuvée, sourced from 1950s-era vines on crumbly pink granite and quartz, the domaine utilizes roughly 25% whole-cluster fermentation in concrete tanks followed by twelve months of aging in used barrels. The 2018 vintage, characterized by a hot, dry summer following a wet spring, provided sufficient groundwater to support the vines through to full physiological ripeness. This results in a structured Gamay defined by deep, fine-grained tannins and a pronounced mineral drive, maintaining tension and architectural precision despite the warmth of the growing season. The magnum format further serves to emphasize the wine's depth, density, and long-term potential.
