Georges Lignier is the largest landowner in this Grand Cru, with a full hectare and a half of vines averaging between 50 and 70 years old. Although Clos Saint-Denis is frequently compared to its neighbor Clos de la Roche - whose wines tend more towards raw power and intensity - the best wines of Clos Saint-Denis are defined by their grace and supreme aromatic depth. In terms of sheer class, their wines compete on a similar plane, even if they each have their own personality.
The character of CSD translates perfectly into the style preferred by winemaker Benoit Stehly (nephew to Georges Lignier), with wines that emphasize perfume, intensity without weight and subtle complexity. There’s an irresistible balance and quiet, brooding elegance here, backed by a firm core that will provide decades of graceful aging. This is the definition of a “cellar champion,” as it’s going to be amazing after a few years of aging and then for decades to come. This noble terroir shines through in spades with the hallmark elegance, weightlessness, and depth of flavors and aromatics one can only find in such a remarkable vineyard.
