2021 Lignier-Michelot, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

The Lignier family is one of the historic families of Morey St. Denis. Virgile’s father and grandfather used to sell their wine to the negociants, but when Virgile got involved in the ‘90s, they started bottling all their own wines. Over the years, the style has changed quite a bit and nowadays, Virgile farms everything organically, employs a high percentage of whole-bunch, gentle vinification and has dialed the new oak back considerably with nothing seeing more than ~33%. The resulting wines are pure, concentrated, incredibly transparent and true to their noble terroirs. I love the texture and balance of these wines and feel he’s really dialed in the extraction and settled into a glorious style. These are regal wines and compelling examples of the ’21 vintage.
