2022 Marie-Therese Chappaz, Grain Ermitage

Cave Marie-Thérèse Chappaz is a renowned winery nestled in Fully, in the heart of the Switzerland’s Valais region, often celebrated as the “superior” Rhône River region! Her remarkable property spans 10 hectares of steeply terraced vineyards that are meticulously managed using biodynamic principles. These massal-selected vineyards are often co-planted, reflecting a deep respect for the land and its natural rhythms. The wines are celebrated for their complexity and their ability to express the unique terroir of the region. The fruit is all hand-harvested, and fermentation is both wild and meticulous, showcasing Chappaz’s commitment to sustainable practices that enhance grape quality and precisely reflect her special terroirs. These are world class wines in our estimation and are a terribly exciting addition to our shop. Very little of this wine is made and obviously even less of it makes its way into the US – about 50 total 6-packs for New York. This is her most famous wine, and her ode to the great whites of the northern Rhône in Hermitage. It is made from 100% Marsanne – 60% of it comes from 60 year-old vines and the other 40% comes from century-old vines. They planted Marsanne in the Valais centuries ago along the banks of the same Rhône river that flows through Lyon into Tain-l’Hermitage. Ideal with food or cheese, but also great alone at the end of a satisfying meal. This wine is concentrated and layered and the stone fruits are on display as well as an unctuous, velvety texture. It has the acidity, concentration and overall balance to thrive in the cellar. Without a doubt, one of the most exciting wines we’ve tasted this year.
