Pedro Parra is a soil scientist before he is a winemaker — and that distinction matters enormously when you're talking about a wine like Newk.

Parra has spent his career mapping the granitic geology of Chile's coastal ranges, and Guarilihue Alto in the Itata Valley is where his obsession with old vines and ancient soils comes into sharpest focus. The vineyard is almost comically small — just 0.2 hectares of 70-year-old dry-farmed Cinsault bush vines on a steep slope of Paleozoic granite rich in quartz and mica. These vines have never been irrigated and have never needed to be. They've simply figured it out.

One hundred percent whole-cluster fermentation, 55 days of maceration in concrete. That's not a typo — 55 days. The extended maceration is how Parra coaxes structure and tension from a grape that most winemakers treat as light and easy. The result is anything but simple: saline, mineral, and iron-tinged, with chalky tannins and a persistent iodine-laced finish that tastes unmistakably of the coastal granite it came from.

2021 was a cool, slow-ripening vintage that played perfectly into Parra's hands — high acidity, lean frame, precise and vertical rather than generous and round.
